We just saw this movie for the first time on TV last night, though it was made in 1975. The explosion of the Hindenburg in 1937 was one of the most famous tragedies ever to occur in New Jersey. Most of the movie takes place over the Atlantic but it ends as the Hindenburg docks at Lakehurst and explodes.

There was one scene where some people in New York speculate that moonshiners in the woods of New Jersey might take a shot at the Hindenburg. Back in 1937, that's probably how New Yorkers thought of New Jersey, something like Appalachia. When my mother commuted from North Bergen into Manhattan in 1945 her coworkers thought she lived in the sticks.

I think New Yorkers first started to catch on when Richard Nixon moved to Saddle River after leaving office in the 1970s. The articles about his luxurious home made "crystal clear" that there was more to New Jersey than moonshiners' stills and oil refineries. ;)
