Station's fans must step up

If you know jazz, you know WBGO, the nation's premier jazz radio station. Broadcasting from Newark around the clock and available on the internet worldwide, the station, with its mix of outstanding music and cogent National Public Radio programming, stops for only one thing: fundraising appeals like the one going on right now.
This time the station will have to meet more than its usual fundraising goals. It will need additional funds to make up an anticipated cut in state funding.
WBGO's rich history -- it has been on the air since 1948 when it began as an educational station, became a public radio station in 1979 and affiliated with NPR in 1980 -- is one in which New Jersey can take pride.
Now is when the thousands here and around the world who derive so much pleasure from WBGO should ensure that this national treasure is preserved. Each should make a contribution that reflects the enjoyment he derives from listening to WBGO.
