Hello - We will be vacationing on 44th. St. South Brigantine NJ. I've never been there before - we are not gamblers and will be with our 4 &7 yr old daughters.
What is Historic Smithville - is it like a mini WIllimsburgh?

What is Gardner's Basin?
How far away is the Atlantic City Boardwalk?

What do you suggest that we do on vacation w/ kids and is there any particular restraunts that you'd recommend.

How are the beaches?

Is the Elephant and the Absecon Lighthouse worth seeing?
Any nature areas?

Any and all suggestions/feedback greatly appreciated.

Welcome Holly

Smithville is a really nice recreated village with a lot of shops. It has quite a bit for kids and I think they still allow you to feed the ducks. We used to always go there when I was little.

I would definitely go see the Absecon Lighthouse (http://www.aboutnewjersey.com/JerseyShore/Lighthouses/absecon.htm) and Lucy the Elephant. Your girls will love being inside the elephant I'm sure.

Brigantine is just north of Atlantic City. It's not too far from the AC Boardwalk. The Brigantine beaches are less crowded than the AC beaches. They're nice there. BTW - make sure you check out the Steel Pier, your children will love it. We're having a contest - "Fun at the Steel Pier (http://www.aboutnewjersey.com/contest/)" - to win a all day pass for family of four.

As for Natural areas - there a ton in that area. Not too far from Smithville is the Edwin B Forsythe Wildlife Refuge (http://www.fws.gov/northeast/forsythe/) (beware of the bugs on some of the trails), not to mention tons of state parks and other wildlife areas within the Pine Barrens.

Also, you may be interested in the Atlantic City Aquarium (http://www.aboutnewjersey.com/Regions/Shore/Atlantic/AtlanticCity/oceanLifeCenter.php) and the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (http://www.marinemammalstrandingcenter.org/main.htm) (which rescues and helps bring back marine mammals to health)

Storybook Land (http://www.storybookland.com/) is also in the area on the mainland.

Have you been to New Jersey before? or to the Atlantic City area?
