The Sandy Hook Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area offers visitors a blend of historical sites, ocean and bay beaches, swimming, hiking, birding, a spectacular holly forest, natural areas and other recreation activities.

This is a great area to visit. It has the oldest operating lighthouse in North America - Sandy Hook Lighthouse. There are also various exhibits throughout the area on life saving.

Fort Hancock Proving Grounds is here - and it is rather disturbing at how little the government has done to preserve them. There is an effort to refurbish more of the buildings. I hope they do - it would be a great benefit to the park and to New Jersey.

I've never seen a "Holly forest" before. Can you post a pic?

I have pics of Sandy Hook. Have to get them together. I have pictures of some of the cacti in the area too.
